Hi- I'm not sure if this is right forum for this question, but here goes: As a teacher and a parent, I struggle with having a higher standard of propriety for my children then, say, the local library. My 9 year old is an avid reader, and I find myself lacking books that I approve for him to read. In his social culture, and natural curiosity, it's not realistic to limit him to only Jewish publications. I was wondering if there is a formal (or home-made) list of "kosher" secular reading that is stimulating, wholesome, and enjoyable. (For example, I would not include the Harry Potter books, Animorphs, or Warriors series on such a list, though he has read many of those and loved them- something around that level and genre. But they have violence and not great messages. I don't have a problem with the old Hardy Boys mysteries, as I remember them. Been through the Bobsey twins, and the easys stuff- Encyclopedia Brown, A-Z mysteries, Magic Treehouse, etc) This particular kid loves science, and animals in particular. I thank anyone in advance for helpful input and wish everyone hatzlacha in the chinuch of their own students and children. |
