The ability to translate passukim accurately is a skill that
eludes many students. The goal of this workshop is to ensure that
students will have the ability to translate and understand
passukim independently even from the early grades. In order to
accomplish this goal, research about the importance of a strong
vocabulary, how to acquire it, and its application to limudei
kodesh is presented. Participants will leave the workshop with a
practical system that is adaptable to various school settings and
teaching styles. The workshop addresses the following major
points: - The importance of monitoring school-wide
vocabulary achievements is explained and statistics about the
underachievement of many of our schools in vocabulary acquisition
is reported.
- The Chumash Vocabulary Test (c) (a new
diagnostic tool for Chumash vocabulary acquisition) will be
introduced. It will be shown how data from this test can help
a school improve it's curriculum.
- A practical system
(that is implemented during regular Chumash instruction) is
described that will enable schools to cover substantially more
material with greater understanding during the school year. It
will empower students with a large Chumash vocabulary that
consists of words, suffixes, and prefixes. The system will engage
all the students in a class to look
inside the Chumash and it will
simultaneously provide maximum instruction to each student on his
own level.
