This is a wonderful concept.  Similarly, I recommend our kodesh teachers offer students extra credit to translate any 1 pasuk in a perek, any 1 rashi, etc.  The key is to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate and reward their learning even if it does not match the particular focus you chose.
