We are looking for ideas for ways to keep our early childhood (3,4 and 5 year-olds) students relatively quiet and orderly while they are waiting for their carpools to be called in the afternoon, sometimes not in their own classrooms.  Approximately half of the teachers are occupied with escorting the children out to the cars as the cars arrive, while the remaining staff watch the children who are still waiting to be called.

I have an issue with that before school begins. Our secretary reads to them,
and the kids love it.

Manipulatives. We combine at the end of the day as well. The best way i have found to deal with this is having stations with manipulatives set up for the children. It helps them keep their mind off of waiting. It also keeps the classroom clean since you have them sitting at the tables with lets say peg boards or brislte blocks etc. Have several station set up so that they can choose and even rotate between. It makes for an easy clean up, busy kids, and everyone is entertained and happy. Once you  get your routine down its fantastic the kids know to grab a toy sit down at a table  and play till there parents get there then to clean up when they are done.
