1  Curriculum Development / Kriyah and Kesiva / down Syndrome Hebrew reading on: October 29, 2014, 03:21:22 AM
Does anyone have any ideas which can help me teach a down syndrome child to read hebrew?

His helper (LSA) is not Jewish so everything I make has to be transliterated so that she can also teach him.

I am involved in using the Aleph Champ hebrew reading scheme in a once a week Cheder.  At the moment, the chidlren are read with 1-1, but I would like to do more.  Does anyone have any ideas?

4  Curriculum Development / Kriyah and Kesiva / Hebrew Reading for 8-11 year olds on: January 05, 2014, 05:34:29 AM
I am the Hebrew reading co-ordinator in a Modern Orthodox primary school in London UK.

I am giving a half hour weekly reading lesson to the children in KS2 (8-11year olds)

They have already learnt all the reading rules, and are able to read but experience has shown us that they need this lesson in order to take the reading seriously and do reading practice at home.

At present in the lesson I go through the aleph bais and vowel names names, and then the children to paired reading for about 3 minutes each, and they give comments as to how their partner read, and how many mistakes they made.  I try to put a strong reader with a weaker one.

My head teacher is not happy with the way the lessons are run, and I am wondering if anyone has any other ideas.

Thanks,
Mrs Kleerekoper

In my class of Y1 - 6year olds there is a boy who has poor short term memory. He now knows the Alpeh Beis and the vowels. However, he is unable to blend 1 letter and 1 vowel.

Does anyone have any ideas how to help him?

8  Curriculum Development / Elementary / Child Friendly Chumash on: February 20, 2010, 03:42:12 PM
I teach in a modern orthodox primary school in NW London UK.  One of the children finds using a normal Chumash diffcult.  I would like to find a child friendly one which has one or two pesukim on each page.  Does anyone know where I can find one?

I have tried Chaims in NW London who have also tried Leahmans in Gateshead for me neither has one or has heard of one.

9  Special Services and Related Issues / Learning Disabilities/Differences / Kodesh signs on: November 05, 2009, 01:57:01 AM
I an the Kodesh SENCO in a primary school.  We have a child in Reception (age 4/5) who is using some of the Makton signs.  I have been told that Makton does not have any Jewish signs, does anyone have any ideas where I can find them or has a list that I can use?
Thanks,

10  Curriculum Development / Kriyah and Kesiva / Re: Ideas For Kriah Fluency on: October 24, 2009, 02:47:22 PM
As a new Kodesh SENCO and Hebrew Reading Coordinator in a Jewish primary school in the UK, I am looking for new methods for teaching reading, and also a method to diagnose reading problems.

Where can I get the Hemshaich book mentioned?

Also, has anyone got a good method for reading assessment for the whole school ages 5-11?

Thanks,
Mrs Cynthia Kleerekoper
