the hemshaich book by ptach is a good overview of kriah that will help you identify any problematic areas a child has.  it should take about a year to complete in class.

I'm trying to find a good kesivah workbook to teach my class how to write block letters. I asked a friend who taught pre-1a and she said they never taught them how to write block, but right away learned script. What do you teach in your school?

There is usually a big jump from Kindergarten to 1st grade, for example: from circle time, centers and tables to desks from lots of hands on projects and varied activities to more book and worksheet work. Should we have the last few months of kindergarten be more like 1st grade or have the first few months of 1st grade more like Kindergarten?

The Alef Bet Adventures computer program by Davka is supposed to be very good.
