I am working closely with a young lady of 22 with cerebal palsy. She is quite disabled- almost no communication and has little use in her hands. Her parents are desperate that I do things that are age appropriate. ideas please.

Does she just have CP (a purely physical problem), or is her mental ability also lower? Parents can be very unrealistic in their expectations of their child with special needs, especially if the child is of lower mental ability. If her mental age is such that she really enjoys kindergarten games, then you will have to gently work at getting her parents to accept their child as she is, not as they wish she was.

I can't say anything about this particular situation, but in response to the previous poster: It's important to remember that CP is usually (not always, but usually) not associated with mental retardation. So although it's often difficult to ascertain the actual level that an individual understands, it's important not to make assumptions and to keep aiming higher just in case the student does in fact understand more than we might give her credit for.

Esther -- You say "almost no" communication, but can she communicate whether or not she understands what you teach? Because generally, "age appropriate" for a person that age would include mostly information transmission.

She really only communicates with her eyes and maybe a smile.
