Title: self-esteem for children with ld
Post by: yaichenbaum on November 15, 2009, 09:27:58 AM
Special education students often suffer from an inferiority complex and lack self esteem.  What can be done to empower these students and bolster their self esteem?

I have found a powerful tool in helping students with self esteem is demystification- having a series of discussions with a student or group of students about their strengths AND weaknesses.  It is a process and does not happen overnight, but creating a classroom climate where we talk about what our challenges are helps a lot.  Also, sharing my own particular challenges with the students is helpful as we discuss ways to work around them as well as ways we can work together to help.
