Title: clean up time
Post by: amit018 on August 13, 2007, 06:47:27 AM
Just saying clean up, is very vague. So is "a tidy room".  The following is magic in my Pre-Nursery:

"Okay kids, I need 20 lego pieces in this box!!"  As they put the legos in, you call out their names and say what number piece they are.  This gives the children specific instructions, and that child gets his attention, everyone else hears and wants to join; and you have a goal (20 pieces) so it's fun:  "Number 1 is from Chaim, #2 came in the box from yehoshua".

Does anyone have any good ideas to make 'clean up time' more fun?

Children clean up to music and when music stops they freeze. i.e. stand still. Children love this and the room gets tidied very quickly.

Make pictures of the tasks that need to be done, and attach with velcro to a second surface (like a hanging  burlap strip). Each card can be removed as the task is done, and put in an "I did it!" box

It depends what unit we're learning then, when we did shapes we picked up first the shape of the week, same was with colors.  otherwise we have a cleanup song "Clean up clean up everybody everywhere, clean up clean up everybody do your share, then to the same tune i'll sing Thank you.. and thank you .... thank you .... and thank you..... i found the kids were so excited to hear their name sang about that it really got everyone moving.  Also my policy is "eveyone played, everyone helps"
