Title: seeking suggested reading list for advanced 4th grader? Post by: D7Liss on December 15, 2008, 08:32:15 PM Hi- I'm not sure if this is right forum for this question, but here goes: As a teacher and a parent, I struggle with having a higher standard of propriety for my children then, say, the local library. My 9 year old is an avid reader, and I find myself lacking books that I approve for him to read. In his social culture, and natural curiosity, it's not realistic to limit him to only Jewish publications. I was wondering if there is a formal (or home-made) list of "kosher" secular reading that is stimulating, wholesome, and enjoyable. (For example, I would not include the Harry Potter books, Animorphs, or Warriors series on such a list, though he has read many of those and loved them- something around that level and genre. But they have violence and not great messages. I don't have a problem with the old Hardy Boys mysteries, as I remember them. Been through the Bobsey twins, and the easys stuff- Encyclopedia Brown, A-Z mysteries, Magic Treehouse, etc) This particular kid loves science, and animals in particular. I thank anyone in advance for helpful input and wish everyone hatzlacha in the chinuch of their own students and children.

Post by: magerl on November 10, 2009, 03:19:05 PM On the chinuch.org website there is a posted secular book list with more than 100 pages of books that are labeled as acceptable and unacceptable. It is listed alphabetically by the name of the author and the reading level of each book is stated. Look at the list with comments. It is very helpful.
